It had a name change back in 1954 when it was called as the Douglas Municipal airport which was named after their mayor back then who was the senior Ben Elbert Douglas. It then became an international airport thus another name change was made in 1982 and currently serves over 100 flights both international and domestic.
The airport had increased in size from 1978 up to 1989 which they call as the age that it turned into a major hub. From 1978 up to 1980, the passengers in this airport had doubled thus they had to add a new parallel runway as well as a control tower to accommodate the number of passengers for the airport. Charlotte traveling had then become comfortable with the expansion of their airport.
