North Carolina is made up of 100 different counties. This places it as the seventh state with the most number of counties. The creation of these many counties took well over three centuries. It started in the year 1668 when Albemarle county was created and ended in 1911 with the designation of Avery and Hoke as Counties.
In 1762, Mecklenburg County was formed. It was named after the English King, George III's consort, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. While the county was named after her last name, the seat of the county got her first name. This county is spread over 546 sq miles and has an estimated population of 902,803 as of last year (2008). Mecklenburg has seven cities and towns namely Charlotte, Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville, in alphabetical order.
