The dispute regarding the city of Charlotte is associated with downtown and/ or uptown Charlotte. The downtown or uptown charlotte is located atop the long rise in-between 2 creeks. The dispute is about which term to use for the place to describe the centre area of the city.

Before 1980s the area was referred to as downtown and has been used by a large number of people even today.

In 1987, the term uptown was used by Charlotte Observer to describe centre area of the city. This was done to give a positive identity to the place. The area is still considered to be uptown or downtown by a large number of people.
