Fourth Ward neighbourhood is designated in 1976. Fourth Ward is a wealthy inhabited neighbourhood suitable for downtown businesses and shops. With the development of Dilworth neighbourhood in the late 19th century, the housing development was shifted to the suburbs and it initiated the decline of all Charlotte's traditional residential wards.
As a result, many of Fourth Ward's residential colonies have changed or converted for boarding houses and offices. In the 1970's, with the help of community leaders, Fourth Ward have undergone a remarkable rebirth.
