Charlotte Checkers is the local ice hockey team which was established in 1993. The Charlotte Checkers are the current members of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). They derived the name "Checkers" which comes from "Checking", a hockey term. The Checkers won a League Championship in the 1995-96 season. They ended the 2004-05 seasons with a record 39-26 and finished the 2005-06 seasons with record 33-34.

Michael Kahn owns the Charlotte Checkers. They don uniform which are navy blue and a little red in color. The Checkers made a shift from the Cricket Arena where they played initially, to St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice located at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
