James K. Polk, the 11th President of United States was born in a city named Pineville, located in Mecklenburg County. His original house is no longer there in Pineville, but an old cabin of his period is kept there.

A monument was built in 1904, but the State of North Carolina moved the monument from its original place in 1964.It is now situated near the Visitor Centre and it was moved to that location in 1968.

According to the 2000 census, the population is approximately 3,450, the average household income was around $38,300, and the per capita income was roughly $21,960.
