The Duke Energy Center is the second tallest building in Charlotte with a height of 786 feet. This is a 48 story majestic skyscraper. This building is the tallest in the world to have used precast double tees. According to the agreement Sonnenschein will be using 35000 square feet of the building with Deloitt getting 82000 square feet.
According to original plans the building was to be named Wachovia Corporate Center. The letter of agreement was signed on 2004 but the official renderings were not given until December 6, 2006. The building was made by blasting tons of earth with over 600000 pounds of explosive. Some of the excavated earth from here was used in the construction of the third runway of Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
This majestic building was bought to reality by Batson Cook Constructions. The engineers took it up as a challenge to make this gigantic building LEED certified green building. Apart from these the building has Afro-American Cultural Center, Mint Museum, Bechtler Art Museum and many more. The facade of the structure has state of art programmable color changing LED and other technologies which will give the building different shades of look.
The cost of the building was a staggering $880 million with a floor area of 1500000 square feet. Currently the building is owned by Wells Fargo. The structural engineering of the building was done by TRC Worldwide Engineering Inc. There were several contractors involved while making the building, they were, Boda Plumbing and Juba Aluminum.
