Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site

Travel to Charlotte North Carolina and start looking for gold! Make sure you come and visit the Reed Gold Mine in the Cabarrus County of North Carolina. This is where the first ever documented gold find was found by a man which the place is named after, John Reed. It wasn't really John who found the gold but it was his son Conrad who found a 17 pounds worth of gold back in 1799. They didn't know that it was actually gold but thought it was just a yellow rock which they used as a doorstop.

A jeweler then saw the rock after 3 years that it was found and told them that it was indeed a gold nugget. John Reed didn't know how much it should be worth and sold it for just $3.50 when it was actually worth over $3,000 at that time. He then knew better and put up his small mining operation for gold which made him a very wealthy man at the time of his death in 1845.

Now, the Reed Gold Mine is named as one of our National Historic Landmark and was even listed as one of the Historic Places in the United States because it was the location for the first ever gold find.
